Dental Veneers for a Brand New Smile

If you are afraid to flash your pearly whites because of crooked, misshaped, cracked or chipped teeth, your dentist may be able to help with affordable cosmetic dental restoration techniques that really will turn your frown upside down. Invisible braces, dental bonding, dental implants, tooth colored fillings and dental veneers are just a few of the procedures that your dentist may recommend to help improve your smile.

A beautiful smile is the first thing people see when they meet you, and if your smile is less than appealing it could affect your self-esteem. In a recent study, a nice smile was what people found most attractive when it came to members of the opposite sex.

According to the American Dental Association, Dental Veneers also called dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers are custom made to fit over the top of your teeth. Made from tooth colored materials Dental Veneers are wafer thin and are bonded directly to the front of your teeth in order to change the length, size, shape, or color.

Dental Veneers can be manufactured out of resin composite materials or porcelain. Porcelain Veneers are designed to resist staining better than resin and actually mimic the reflecting properties of natural light much like your own teeth. Resin veneers are much thinner and require less removal of the surface of your natural tooth. Your dentist will be able to determine what type of Dental Veneer is best for your particular situation.

Dental Veneers usually require three trips to your dentist, which includes a consultation, preparation, and application.

After your initial consultation, your dentist will prepare the tooth or teeth for the Dental Veneer removing about a ½ millimeter of the enamel on the surface of your tooth. Once an impression has been made, it will be sent to a dental lab. This usually takes one to two weeks. If your teeth are unsightly, temporary Dental Veneers may be placed.

When your Dental Veneers are ready to go your dentist will temporarily place the veneer to examine for color and fit. Once satisfied, your Dental Veneers will be permanently bonded to your natural tooth or teeth. After bonding, a special light or laser will be used to harden or cure the veneer. Because of the enamel removal, porcelain veneers are permanent.
