Are Your Dieting Habits Ruining Your Teeth and Gums?

According to Dr. David Schaefer, constant dieting can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Even so-called healthy diets can be an issue for your oral health.

Below are some diets to watch out for if you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Low-Fat Diets

Eating diets that are low in fat will interfere with fat-soluble vitamin absorption. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are extremely important for teeth, gums, and overall health. Vitamin D helps your body absorb much needed calcium for strong bones and teeth. If you aren’t getting enough Vitamin D, the enamel on your teeth and your jawbone will begin to break down.

Dr. Schaefer explains that diets that include a healthy amount of fat also produce dopamine. The chemical neurotransmitter improves mood. If you lack Omega-3 fatty acids, stress and anxiety levels will increase as well. This can lead to TMD or tooth grinding. Low fat products are also high in sugar increasing your risk of cavities.

Keto Diets

Although there hasn’t been any evidence that the Keto diet causes tooth decay or gum disease, it will cause chronic bad breath. If you or someone you know has breath that smells like old fruit or fingernail polish remover with acetone, they are in ketosis. When the body is in ketosis, it is burning fat, not carbohydrates.

You can rid your mouth of halitosis by chewing on fresh mint. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to include a small amount of carbs in your diet, as this will sweeten your breath. High ketone levels can also cause high acidic blood levels, which could damage your heart, cause fatigue, or make you burn muscle and not fat.

Low Calorie Diets

Cutting calories is a great way to trim your waistline, but if you are reducing your food intake depleting your body of much needed nutrients your teeth and gums will pay the price. Because a low calorie diet depletes the body of vitamins and minerals, malnutrition could be an issue. Pies, Cookies and Cakes Oh My!

If you must indulge rinse after as starchy foods can get caught in the grooves and fissure at the back of your teeth. Add sugar to the mix and your teeth will suffer for it.

Dried Fruit

That yummy dried fruit platter that arrives at your front door every year can cause issues with your teeth. Sticky figs, dates, and apricots are loaded with sugar, and just like gummy bears can stay on your teeth, even after brushing.

Five Bad Oral Health Habits

Cough Drops
