Porcelain Veneers or Cosmetic Dental Crowns

Cosmetic dental crowns and porcelain veneers do virtually the same thing. Repair chipped, cracked, and stained teeth. However, as your cosmetic dentist in Independence explains, there is a difference between porcelain veneers and cosmetic dental crowns.

Cosmetic Dental Crowns and Porcelain Veneers

While both veneers and crowns are used for restoration, they also improve function and appearance. The biggest difference between the two is tooth removal, how thick the dental material is, and how much of the tooth is covered. Both veneers and crowns improve your smile.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are made from dental porcelain and are very thin. Matched to the color of your natural teeth, veneers only cover the fronts of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are strong, but they can be brittle. If you grind your teeth, veneers may not be the best option as repeated impact could cause cracks and breaks in the veneer.

Cosmetic Dental Crowns

Dental crowns cover the whole tooth and are manufactured out of porcelain, metal or a combination of the two. Crowns are twice as thick as porcelain veneers and are much more durable. Cosmetic dental crowns are also more resistant to cracks, chips, and breaks.

Tooth Preparation for Porcelain Veneers

While porcelain veneers are more conservative than cosmetic dental crowns, they are still permanent, as some of the enamel has to be removed for a natural fit. Dr. David Schaefer will only remove a thin layer of enamel not touching the back or the core of your tooth.

Tooth Preparation for Cosmetic Dental Crowns

Because a crown literally caps the tooth, about 60 to 75 percent of the tooth that is visible is trimmed before the crown is placed. This means up to four times as much removal as porcelain veneers.

Choosing Between Porcelain Veneers and Crowns

If you have minor cosmetic issues that need to be addressed, your Independence cosmetic dentist will probably recommend veneers. However, if you have more serious issues, such as badly damaged teeth, Dr. Schaefer may recommend cosmetic dental crowns.

Porcelain Veneers Can Change Your Entire Life

Porcelain veneers are more affordable than ever before. Dr. David Schaefer recommends porcelain veneers if you have teeth that are chipped, cracked or worn. If you have a space between your teeth or teeth that are tipped or rotated, porcelain veneers could be a good fit for you, your smile, and your confidence.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that are bonded to the fronts of your teeth. Because a small amount of enamel needs to be removed for natural fitting veneers, the cosmetic dental procedure is permanent.

Cosmetic veneers are made from dental grade porcelain and mimic light just as your natural teeth do.

Porcelain Veneers Placement

If Dr. Schaefer believes that you are a good fit for porcelain veneers, you will need three dental appointments.

During your first porcelain veneers appointment, a portion of the enamel will be removed. Once removed, a mold or impression will be sent to the lab for manufacture. If your teeth are not ready for public consumption, a temporary set of veneers may be fitted until your permanent cosmetic veneers are ready.

After a couple of weeks, you will return to Dr. Schaefer’s office for permanent placement. The veneers will be checked for fit and color, and once your dentist is satisfied, will be bonded into place. After placement, the bonding will be cured with a laser or light.

Once the veneers have been bonded, they will be polished to perfection.

Dr. Schaefer recommends a third dental appointment to check your new veneers for placement and bite.

Cosmetic dentistry can change your life. A beautiful smile not only gives you more confidence, but can also improve your overall health.
